    Hookah FAQ

  • What is (a) Hookah?
Hookah is The New Chill , A Hookah is a waterpipe used to smoke Shisha.

  • What is "The New Chill"?
Hookah is Social Facilitator just as much as it is a smoking device. The New Chill has grown in astounding numbers with over 600 Hookah Bars opening up in the USA over the past 6 years. It's popularity is driven by its sweet tasting shisha as well as its socially facilitating capabilities, allowing Girls and Guys to hang out, meet new people and chat it up, over a nice relaxing hookah.
  • What is better a single double or triple hose hookah?
The number of hoses your hookah has will not effect the taste or smoke. As hookahs are mainly smoked in groups of atleast 3, its convenient to have enough hoses to go around. Check out our Single Hose or Multi Hose Hookahs.
  •  What height is the best?
The height of the hookah should have no effect on the taste or pull of the hookah. As long as the Hookah is air tight it should smoke to perfection whether it is 12" or 100".
  • Whats the difference between glass and acrylic?
The first obvious difference is that the Acrylis base is made from tough plastic, its very durable and great for those who may break a glass base. There is no difference in the smoking or taste of the hookah regardless of the base. Acrylic Hookahs must not have used hookah water in their base over night or for any extended period of time. Always emptying out your hookahs water after smoking is recommended to keep the hookah fresh tasting.
  • What is a twist-on stem?
A twist-on stem screws the stem into the base, securing the base air tightly. Its easy to open and close, great for cleaninig and maintenece.
  • What is the Hookah Hose Upgrade?
Some Hookahs come with our standard Hookah Hoses, we do offer with your hookah Modern Metal Tip Hookah Hose(s) at a special discount. The Modern Metal Tip Hookah Hose(s) come in the color of your hookah, the hose(s) are 6 feet long and made from the highest quality leather used on any hose. It's hose is extra wide to allow for a bigger taste.
  • Should I get it?
Yes! it's a steal! The Modern Metal Tip Hookah Hose is our Best Smoking Hose, it is extra wide allowing for more taste and it's leather is extra durable. Save upto 50% on when purchased with your hookah.
  • Which or what kind of Hookah is best for me? What Hookah should I get?
It is most important to make sure your hookah fits you. Whether it be an H Uno Hookah for the smoker on the go, or the Aladdin Twist Hookah (Our #1 Hookah Bar Hookah) for the sophisticated smoker, each and every hookah has qualities that can make it perfect for you.
Unique hookahs such as the all glass Double Hose Crystal Cases or the Light up hookahs like the Aquarium Hookah and Mini Night Light Hookah. The number of hoses whether a 1 2 3 or 4 hose hookah should be based upon your planned usage, if your looking to use your hookah with lots of friends, a (Party) Multiple Hose Hookah would be best for you. Every multiple hose hookah on Hookah Town comes with an auto seal feature, so you wont have to cover the hookah hose when your friend is using their hose.
  • Heavy versus Light Hookah?
It is not the weight of the hookah you should be concerned about but the materials the hookah is made from, you will notice our new materials guide for most hookahs, which will tell you the types of metals and glass used to make the hookah. The quality pyramid starts with hookahs made from chrome such as the at the top then, stainless steel hookahs such as the Aladdin Twist, then brass hookahs. As you will find apparent we do not sell any brass hookahs due to their lacking longevity for the average hookah smoker.

Storing your Shisha in a Stay Fresh Canister and stored in a cool dry room will keep your shisha fresh. Refrigerating your shisha is also recommended.

    Charcoal FAQ

  • Whats is the Hookah Charcoal for?
The Charcoal after being lit is placed atop the holed tinfoil or Tin Screen atop the hookah clay bowl the heat vapors from the extremely hot coal are used to burn the wet shisha.
  • How do you put out a charcoal?
There are many easy and safe ways to put out a charcoal, dropping it into water is always fast and easy, whether in your toilet, a bucket, or a puddle.
  • How do you light a charcoal?
It is always best to light a charcoal outside or out a window, for a quicker light use a
  • How can i prevent the coal from burning me, my table and my carpet?!
Get the Modern Wind Cover, if your hookah will fall the coal will fall into the windcover protecting you and your carpet. If your hookah ever begins to fall and you catch it, the coal will not slide off!
  • How old is too old?
Charcoals last for quite awhile however if stored under extreme tempatures, whether hot or cold will cause them to light less quickly, possibly break upon lighting, and will not burn as long as usual.
  • Should I clean the ash of the charcoal?
With the better types of charcoals such as the Swift Lite and Five Star brands you should not need to clean of the ask from the coal, removing the ash is only neccessary when the ash begins to break up and fall into the hookah bowl. If that is happening use your tong and gently push down atop the middle of the coal with the thin side of the tong and push off one side of the ash, then do the same for the other side.
  • Should I light my charcoal atop my hookah?
No, Never! Lighting your charcoal atop of your hookah will cause it to taste terrible, always be sure to have your hookah charcoal fully lit before placing it atop your hookah.
  •  Which type of Hookah Charcoal is best for me?
The type of charcoal that is best for you is dependent upon your smoking preferences as well as your smoking location. Typically for hookah smokers it is recommended to use the Five Star Quicklite Large Charcoals, these are very easy to light and will have your hookah smoking in less then 25 seconds and will last for up to an hour. Be sure to light the coal outside a window or outside and away from your body.
As opposed to the Quicklite charcoals the newer method of stove light Hookah coals has allowed for a cleaner smoke, (these may take up to 60 seconds to light on a stove).
Although abit more time consuming these Stovelite charcoals are beneficially regarding their cleaner smoother smoke (for those whom complain of a charcoal taste to their hookah, these are perfect for you) which allows your hookah to taste as best as possible. Regarding lighting Stovelite charcoals, as with all charcoals, the more the charcoal is lit the quicker your hookah will be started, keep in mind with finger coals, the size of the coal and how much is lit will determine how quick your hookah will begin to smoke (learn your preferred size by initially braking off 1/5 of the finger and working your way up from there).
  • Which part of the hookah coal is most important to be lit first and how can I light the coal faster?
Initially the bottom portion of the coal is most important (for tablets the bottom is the indented portion, for fingers whichever side is lit best should be the bottom); eventually the top will become red and fully lit. The initially puffs are based upon the bottom of the coal. The size of the hookah coal will determine how long the smoke will last; you can always add more coals to the same bowl as they finish until the shisha is fully burned. Keep in mind when placing more coals onto the bowl, not to cover every hole of the tin foil with the coal; some air flow is needed to keep the hookah tasting its best.

    Hookah Smoking FAQ

  • How old must you be to buy or smoke a hookah?
You must be 18 years old to buy or smoke a hookah.
  • My hookah is harsh, what to do?
Your Hookah can be harsh for several reasons, (*Quick Tip: Packing the shisha light and fluffy into the bowl will lead to the most taste and smoothest smoke) begin by puffing out through your hose, softly and in spurts to release the harsh smoke from the base through the air gasket. air gasket- ball must be rolling and able to be pushed up when blown from hose.
Then take a look at your clay bowl, are the holes too big? too many? too close together? Try pushing the charcoal away from some of the holes towards a different part of the bowl and towards the edge. then begin to pull on the hookah again and it should be just fine. If need be add an additional layer of tinfoil onto the bowl with holes. The underlying cause of any harsh smoke is usually due to too much tobacco being burned too quickly. Whether it is due to the positioning of the Hookah Charcoal, or the amount of holes, the size of holes and their spacing, be sure not too much tobacco is being burned at once.
  • I'm not getting any smoke?
First check to be sure your hookah is air tight, once you are sure it is continue to test the hookah for any clogs or holes.
  • How do i make sure my Hookah is Air Tight?
With your Hookah Fully assembled, take the clay bowl off the top of your hookah, and place your hand sealing the top opening of the hookah. Then pull on the hose, if you dont get any air, your hookah is perfect. If you are able to suck in, make sure all hookah parts are fastened securely and that your hand is sealed well atop the hookah and try again, if it is still letting air in, begin to listen while you breath as to where the hole might be. The most popular air tight issue is the Hose, you can test your hose by sealing your hand around one end and breathing in from the other, if you dont get any air, the hose is good.
  • I keep getting water in the hose?
First check your water level, if the water in your base is too high it may get sucked in when you smoke. If the water level is just fine, try to pulling less hard on your hookah.
  • Make sure to empty out your hookah water after every smoke.
This will keep your hookah in its best tasting smoking condition for as long as possible. Cleaning out the water prevents the hookah from smelling, becoming bad tasting, and rusting.
  • What is that valve opposite the hose (slot) used for?
The Valve is there to enable the hookah smoker to blow out the smoke from the base if the smoke becomes undesirable for any reason. As shown in "My Hookah is Harsh, What to do?" if your hookah becomes harsh blowing slightly and in short spurts through the hose will clean out the smoke in the base, so you may fix the charcoal or whatever problem caused the undesirable taste.
  • I lost my Hookah Air Valve Ball, what can I do?
To fix your hookah and regain its air-tightness it is important to have the air valve ball there , if it is not it is recommended to crush tinfoil into a tiny ball and place it in the valve, filling the entire hole, if the hole is not completely closed the hookah will not be air tight, you will hear air coming from the valve when pulling on the hose, if it continues to leak, plug the hole with tinfoil, or wrap tinfoil around the valve, not allowing any air in. The tin ball may not allow you to blow out when the hookah is harsh, however if the air valves cap is left off, you can pull the tin ball out to allow for clearing the base.
  • What can I add to my Hookah Base (Water) to add flavor to my Hookah?
Adding everything from tea to your favorite juices or beverages ;) can add loads of flavor to your hookah!
  • My Hookah isn't pulling easily, it is very stiff, and I cant get a good puff, what can be the cause?
The first thing you would want to check, as always is that your hookah is air tight, like shown in I'm not getting any smoke? After begin to check your hose, unplug it from the hose slot and attempt to blow hard through the hose, is there something stuck in there? is the hose clogged? If the hose is fine the next thing you may want to check is the hookah stem, be sure the stem is clear, shine a light at the base and remove the hookah clay bowl, be sure you can look directly down and there is nothing stuck in the pipe. If your hookah is clean and not being constricted by anything the next piece to check would be the hookah bowl, be sure the bowls holes are not clogged by old shisha. When all of that has been confirmed clear the cause may be the amount of holes poked in your tinfoil. You may either need to add more small holes, or increase the size of the holes to allow more air to come through the hookah. Be sure not to entirely restrict the airflow of the hookah by covering every hole poked, with the lit charcoal, there should always be some holes which are not covered by the charcoal.

    Hookah Setup FAQ

  • Tin Foil - what kind? how to? what size holes should i poke? huh?
The thinner the tin foil the better, be sure to have the bland side of the tinfoil facing up. Cut a piece approximately 4"x4" or however much is needed to securely fully cover and wrap around the top of the bowl. The size and amount of holes poked into the tinfoil will determine the lightness or thickness of the smoke. The smaller and less holes poked...the lighter the smoke will be...the wider and more holes poked, the thicker the smoke will be. It is best to start off using a pin to poke your holes, start off poking holes as if you were cutting a pizza pie, with 6 holes being punched for each row. Experimenting is needed to achieve your preffered smoke, changing your holes formation (size and amount) in an attempt to create a better smoke is reccomended.
  • How much water do i put in the base?
It is best to have the drop down tube, submerged in the water approximately 1"-1 1/2 ". The amount of water in your base will determine how hard you will need to pull on your hookah when smoking. The more water the more filtration there is as well. The less water the easier it is to pull.
  • How do I pack the Shisha into the bowl?
It is best to break up the shisha into thin pieces before placing it into the bowl (using a fork or tongs). Then gently place the shisha into the bowl filling it up just below the brim ,allowing the Shisha to stay fluffy and spaced, this will ensure the best tasting smoke.
  • How do i disassemble my hookah?
With egyptian hookahs that are tightly squeezed in, attempt o pull them stem in a twisting motion until it comes free. When placing the stem into the base wet the grommet(rubber around the stem) to help it slide in
  • What is a Hookah Bowl and Charcoal Protector?
If you have ever smoked a hookah you have most probably seen a charcoal fall , a clay bowl break or someones carpet gets burned. If you would like to avoid all of those problems use the take a look at theHookah Bowl and Charcoal Protector when someone accidently knocks down your hookah or pulls the hose to hard tipping the hookah, the Hookah Bowl Protector will either stop the clay bowl and coal from sliding off or if it does fall , the coal and bowl will land safely inside the Protector, Protecting your hookah, carpet and most importantly your feet!
